The reality is that we need to make genuine connections with our customers if we want to them to turn into raving fans.  At PackMedia we are passionate about helping SME, Not for Profits, Event Organisers or Promoters create opportunities to be ‘Top of Mind’ by providing tangible and engaging target campaigns via our fully integrated consumable packaging of customised water, personalised confectionery and coffee cups.  The quote is very apt from where I stand, I believe that we have moved away from traditional means of attracting new customers and retaining the ones that we have.  It is no longer enough to have a good product, great customer service or systems in place or what ever it is that sets you apart from your competitors.   We have moved to a time where running a successful business is about knowing your market and truly understanding what their needs and pain points are and then generously sharing strategies and solutions which meet their needs.  Providing value and leaving a positive lasting impression, as the world of ‘Social Sharing’ is so powerful and can be the make or demise of a business.

These days the sharing of information happens on a myriad of platforms from TwitterPinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Google+ to name but a few, all of which have their own benefits, post types and demographic.  By attempting to be on all or many platforms it can lead to a haphazard on-line presence being established and can leave you feeling totally overwhelmed to say the least.

So, how does one know what the right platform is for their business/ club/organisation and which will generate the best Return On Effort (ROE) not to mention Return On Investment (ROI)?  This is something I’ve struggled with over the past few years, having started my business less than three years ago, only having a personal Facebook page to my name at the time, realising there was so much I didn’t know and needed to know about this rapidly ever changing landscape of information technology, so I began attending  conferences, seminars, reading copious blogs, books and articles, so as to gain some understanding.

I was beginning to see some common threads appear form experts on the matter:

  • That of being authentic, being yourself because nobody else can do that better than you.
  • Asking your clients what social media platforms they use.
  • Familiarising yourself with the do’s and don’t s of the platform you choose to use.
  • Sharing insights which help your market develop a connection to you and your business.
  • People want to make connections but they only keep connections with people and brands they love, trust and connect with because they feel they are understood by them.
  • Imagery is a Powerful way to get a message to market and a great way to get a conversation going.
  • Having a mobile friendly on-line presence, as people are consuming their information more and more on their smart devices.
  • If you feel that you need to be across all or many platforms, there are programs such as Hootsuite, which can help you plan and organise your posts.

According to the report published this year by the SocialMediaExaminer about the  importance of social media for people’s business the statistics are compelling.  With a significant 86% of marketers saying that social media was important to their businesses.  There has been a slight increase from 2012, when 83% thought social media was important.
